Panpsychism:
What do we do with it?
My wife Brunla and I are both Panpsychists. Brunla wrote several
of the articles on these web pages, and she was the editor on many of
the other pages. A couple of years ago she commented, "So we're
Panpsychists, what do we do with it?"
Recently I saw a TV ad showing people hugging trees. The ad suggested
that they do something more about it by buying one of their fuel-efficient
cars. This would be a step in the right direction. (Sales of Honda's
hybrid SUV are down and the new 300+ horesepower Cadillac are up 127%.)
Many thoughtful people believe our wars are really about oil and gas.
Yet almost none of us are willing to take any personal responsibility
for our addiction to oil. Recently I conducted an experiment with my
car. For two weeks I drove my Toyota Corrolla at a top speed of 55mph.
Instead of my usual 31 miles per gallon, I got over 36 miles per gallon.
I put the cruise control at 55 and drove in the slow lane. Cars zipped
around me but surprisingly no one honked at me. This seemed a step in
the right direction.
I'm old enough to remember WW2. Gas was rationed and the speed limit
was 45 mph. Yes, Virginia, people actually had to sacrifice in that
war. Today scrifice is unthinkable! (Unless, of course, you are young
man who is sent to the war zones.)
